Sir Henry Royce 1933

Sir Henry Royce died eighty years ago today.

Born on the 27th of March 1863 (one hundred and fifty years ago) in Awalton, Huntingtonshire to James and Mary.
Died on the 22nd of April 1933.

When his father's flour mill business failed they moved to London. James Royce died there and Henry (the youngest of five children) had to sell newspapers for W.H. Smiths and deliver telegrams for the Post Office in Mayfair, having only had one year of formal schooling.
In 1878 he then moved on to an apprenticeship with the Great Northern Railway with the financial help of an Aunt.
He moved on to a tool company in Leeds, then joined The Electric Light and Power Generator Company, and finally the Lancashire Maxim-Weston Electric Company.

In 1884 he started an electrical business (using his twenty Pounds Sterling worth of savings) with Earnest Claremont (often referred to as the 'Hyphen' in Rolls-Royce, by the way) in Hulme, Manchester.

'F.H.Royce and Company'.

He was fascinated with all things mechanical and after purchasing a 1901 Decauville car he decided he could vastly improve this car.

Oh, and he did just that. Here is the first Royce car :

The rest is history...

I'm sure he knew his name would last on as the ultimate in Motorcars.

This statue stands on Moore Lane, Derby.

Sir Henry Royce OBE, first baronet of Seaton.
One of the world's finest engineers.
His name will live on forever.

Absolutely Fabulous

The British radio and TV celebrity, Chris Evans, is driving a Rolls-Royce Ghost EWB from Land's End (the most southerly point of mainland UK) to John O'Groats (the most northerly point of the mainland) in aid of the Breast Cancer Care charity...
He's  hoping to raise at least £1 million. And he's not driving just any Ghost EWB...

Remember Thunderbirds and Lady Penelope's six-wheel Rolls-Royce? Well, Chris Evan's car doesn't have six wheels...

But it is pink!

With blushing pink leather and hand-embroidered pink ribbons on each head rest...

And special treadplates...

It's a great cause...an absolutely fabulous idea...and you can hire it too!

Or at least make a donation...

Just click here: http://www.fab1million.co.uk/

Or check out the video.

He'll even dress as Parker...

And he really looks the part...

Here he is leaving Land's End...

Thunderbirds are go!

By the way, Chris Evans actually owns the FAB1 registration...

Here it is on his Phantom...

FERNAND BACHMANN - 24 heures du Mans 1923

Here is a part re-creation of the 24 heures du Mans of 1923.

Yes, the first ever Le Mans race.

Capt. J.F. Duff and Frank Clement came in 4th in their Bentley 3 Litre.

90 years this year.

Bentley Factory - Mulsanne Assembly Line

Lets take a look at the Mulsanne Assembly Line at Crewe.

I'm not quite sure the hand in the pocket is the best look, but I don't mind the uniform.

I do quite like that Bentley apron.

Actually I want one. Nice accessory good for an Aussie barbie with the Bentley Drivers Club.

They are hand built. Just bang the wind shield in with your hands, son.

Now to the back window. Careful does it. Tongue out concentration there.

And we're in.

Looks good Bentley boys.

Press Photos from Bentley Motors.

And The World Stood Still

So here it is...

The Rolls-Royce Wraith - the fastest and most powerful Rolls-Royce ever....

Japan launch photos...

V12, 8-speed transmission, 624 BHP and 590 lbs ft torque...

0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds...

Modern, fastback styling...

But still offering a sumptuous, cosseting interior...

I've started saving for mine!

Dragon Red with fine White coachlines and 21 inch 10 spoke propeller alloys

I wish I could two tone it, though

Let's go wild.

Her is a nice film about a Bentley Arnage Mulliner.

It is in Diamond Black with matching Diamond Black split wheels.
