Rolls-Royce & Bentley Day 2010

Just stumbled across video of the 2010 Rolls-Royce & Bentley Owners Club Japan's annual Rolls-Royce & Bentley Day at the historic Red Brick warehouses in Yokohama.

Otherwise known as ロールス・ロイス&ベントレーDAY2010.

Always is a good turnout.

This year's summary is here.

A7 URC

Rather contrived, but I suppose it could possibly read as AZURE, particularly with the couple of stragically placed screws:

But A2 URE is so much better:

Nothwistanding the plate, this first generation Bentley Azure makes a significantly cheaper alternative to the Azure T featured in the current From The Classifieds: http://www.bentleyspotting.com/2013/12/from-classifieds_9.html?m=1

It's a 1995 example with just 25,000 miles from new:

And at GBP 39,995 it is one of the cheapest for sale...

I was surprised to find that these cars are now available in the UK for less than GBP 40,000 - they must surely be nearing the bottom of the depreciation curve.

Terribly British Day, Canberra 2013

Here is my entrance to the Terribly British Day 2013, a British car show held every year in Canberra, Australia.

Yep, I've still got my yellow wheels. To the video.

And I totally wore this shirt.

Bentley Azur 2 Door Spyder by Jankel

Every time I see photos of this model of car I smile.

Is it a matter of people being able to obtain simply what they want.

I want a convertible Bentley Turbo R please.

As Australians say, 'No worries, mate.'

Speak to Mr Robert Jankel and he will make you one. He calls it a Bentley Azur 2 Door Spyder.

And do you want one?

Yes? Well pop yourself on ebay Item number:280598821409 and pick one up from Kyoto, Japan.

Here it is.

It is a very rare sight, in quite a nice colour.

I do wonder what the Badge to the right says? Azur Spyder? Jankel? I'm not sure.

The ebay ad says "1980 Bentley CONVERTIBLE"

"SUPECIAL ORDER MADE 2 DOOR CONVERTIBLE"

"SUPER LOW MILE RUN ONLY 12000KM"

"SUPER RICH ONE OWNER FROM NEW COST U$650000 WHEN NEW"

Now I can not say that this rear seat is quite standard on a Bentley!

Now to the Chassis number SCBZE02B3KCX26706.

So in fact it is not quite a 1980 Bentley as the ad states, but a 1989 Bentley.

And talking about models, it is actually not a Bentley Turbo R, but a Bentley Eight.

There is no Turbo, but it does have a 6.75 Litre V8, naturally aspirated with a catalytic converter.

It certainly one special car.

The ad concludes with "NOW US$62000 INCLUDE SHIPPING FEE TO YOUR BEST SEA PORT japan@i-ml.com"

I would love to own it, but the steering wheel is on the wrong side.

Check out a previous one for sale in Japan here, and a Rolls-Royce version also in Japan previously for sale here.

Good luck to the person who buys it, and thank-you to Lee for sending in the link.

Hedi Slimane and Rolls-Royce

I do not mind at all when high art and fashion come together with a little Rolls Royce and Bentley action. We have seen a number of examples here on Bentley Spotting. Vivian Westwood did her thing with a 1992 Bentley Continental, Romero Britto painted a modern Continental GT, David LaChapelle was mentioned here, we have seen Ray Mumford's Art Car, Bentley commissioned Bernd Lehmann to do an etching here and even MJ's interior design can be seen here, and more likely for himself.

Earlier this year French fashion designer Hedi Slimane took his lens to his very own 1985 Rolls-Royce Corniche in a studio in Los Angles, for websites Nowness and Dazed Digital.

Hedi Slimane has been the art Director at the house of Yves Saint Laurent and also worked at Christian Dior, where he became the creative designer for men’s clothing, and designed the line of Dior Homme.

One article states "He might have been far too young to drive one, but Hedi Slimane's obsession with the affluent car make Rolls Royce started when the photographer was only six years old."

"Sketching the car over and over in his note pad, little did young Slimane know that the car epitomises everything he would later on in life be known for, both as a fashion designer and as a photographer; pure luxury, explicit shapes and superior quality."

The photographs certainly give a creative view of the subject.

Slimane owns two black Rolls-Royce cars.

With black interiors.

These photographs really do show the quality and details of the Rolls-Royce through an artists eye.

I'll take one. Or two.

Also during the photo session, musician Beck recorded the 1985 Rolls-Royce Corniche starting up.

Give it a listen here.

Thanks to Nowness and Dazed Digital for the piece.

Corniche's at Crewe

Lets take a look at some convertibles on the production line at Crewe.

The body of the Rolls Royce and Bentley Corniche and the Bentley Continentals were made at H.J Mulliner Park Ward in London, but at various times of the manufacture they were at Crewe being assembled.

The assembly does look at touch complex.

And the roof. It just has to be right!

Here is an original press photograph of the Bentley Corniche. Notice the 1900TU registration which is still in use with press photographs today.

And now a Rolls Royce Corniche press photograph. With the 20TU number plate. British United Airlines hey? I like standing up in cars too.

By the way, you can always get a Ming Blue version with gold. Not just a gold Spirit of Ecstasy, no no, gold everything darling.

Nice and subtle.
