False Appearance

This rather smart 1979 Bentley Corniche Saloon isn't as it first appears...

It's got a later fuel-injected engine...

But thats not all. There is more...

With the chassis number, CRH50098, giving a big clue.

Spotted it?

Yes, this is actually another Rolls-Royce to Bentley conversion...

Between 1998-2000, it was fully restored as a Bentley while also being fitted with a 1989 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit fuel-injected engine and Harvey Bailey suspension upgrades.

The cost of these works is reputed to have exceeded GBP 60,000...a not insubstantial sum.

It's therefore quite suprising that SRH50098 was offered at Bonham's sale of Rolls-Royce & Bentley Motor Cars in June 2003, just 3 years and 12,000 miles later.

Somewhat Unusually

This misty photo of a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow 2-door saloon, chassis #CRH9543, comes from a Bonhams catalogue for a sale at the Beaulieu National Motor Museum, July 2002:

It is described as having silver coachwork with, "somewhat unusually", a dark blue painted roof, rather than the more typcial everflex, and a matching blue leather interior.

Despite being offered in good condition, complete with comprehensive history file, it failed to sell against a guide of GBP 12-14,000.

It subsequently appeared at Bonhams' Rockingham Castle sale in June 2008, and here are photos from the on-line catalogue...

The second photo really shows off the painted roof:

Described as has having service history with P&A Wood and Broughtons of Chelteham and with 93,065 recorded miles, it sold for GBP 7,475 including premium.

Silver Seraph Sport

When first launched in late 1998, the Bentley Arnage came fitted with a 4.4 litre, twin turbo V8 motor.

It's close relation, the Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph, with a 5.4 litre, V12 engine.

Customer demand subsequetly saw the introduction of the Bentley Arnage Red Label, the "Red Label" signifying it being fitted with a revised version of the traditional Rolls-Royce 6.75 litre, V8 engine that can be traced back through the Silver Spirit and Silver Shadow ranges to the the Silver Clouds of the late fifties and early sixties.

The Silver Seraph was never offered with this engine, reflecting both a desire to futher differentiate the Rolls-Royce and Bentley brands, and the driving charactersitics of the V12 engine seemingly considered more suitable for the luxurious saloon.  

But it seems someone wanted a Silver Seraph Red Label, or what could be described as a Silver Seraph Sport, with this car photographed at the 2015 RREC Annual Rally in June....

Subtle styling clues identify this as an Arnage Red Label fitted with a Rolls-Royce grille, but it seems to be a well thought out and executed conversion with RR badged alloy wheels, and few obvious signs of its Bentley origins on show.       

It's a shame the factory never offered something similar.

[More] More Than Four

Team Bentley Spotting has previously featured a number of Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit/Silver Spur 6-door limousines.

Two more are currently for sale in the UK...

Both are ex-funeral limousines. One is based on a 1997 Silver Spur, the other on a 1990 Silver Spur II. Unfortunately there are no details about the coachbuilder or conversions.

Happy 50th!


The Silver Shadow/ T series car is now fifty years old.

Introduced to the public in Autumn 1965 (1966 model) as the most radical new Rolls-Royce ever. 
A monocoque body... 
Oh my....No more chassis.
The automotive journalist John Bolster was quoted as saying " A new car for modern conditions".
He went on to say how the car 'felt astonishingly small being a car of reasonable size'.
The car was an instant hit.
Very different from its predecessor, the Silver Cloud III

I have admired these cars for a long time and they are fantastic cars to own. Not too expensive compared to the silly prices of classic cars these day. Buy them, stay on top of their issues (old car issues) and love them forever. Good value for money. 
Get one before their prices go silly too....
