Rolls-Royce & Bentley Day 2010

Just stumbled across video of the 2010 Rolls-Royce & Bentley Owners Club Japan's annual Rolls-Royce & Bentley Day at the historic Red Brick warehouses in Yokohama.

Otherwise known as ロールス・ロイス&ベントレーDAY2010.

Always is a good turnout.

This year's summary is here.

Rolls-Royce Silver Spur Turbo R by Hooper

It's always so hard when you want both and you have to make a decision. First world.

Do I want a Rolls-Royce or do I want a Bentley?

I really like how the Turbo R drives and it's power, but I like the look of the Rolls-Royce.

I can't make up my mind. I want both. Please. Thank-you.

This indecision would have cost a pretty penny. And would have been fun.

That's right, this is a special commission Rolls-Royce Silver Spur Turbo R by Hooper.

It's a Bentley Turbo R chassis and engine with all Rolls-Royce Silver Spur trim.

With Hooper additions of course like the small rear window and those chrome sills with colour coded bumpers.

How cool are the badges.

It's a Hooper Silver Spur Turbo R.

I really like how the 'R' is red, as it should be. That's detail.

It's currently for sale. Here is the dealer's video explaining more.

Buy it for £19,950 here.

I like how Hooper resolved the Bentley logos on the dials. Just paint over them.

Special car.

Here's around 1000 photos of Hooper cars.

Bentley Turbo R 2 door by Hooper & Co.

Here is another example of a Bentley Turbo R 2 door by Hooper & Co from the archives.

I do like the Hooper sports steering wheel.

Here are just the photos.

I do like the rear window.

Notice the wider centre console to house all that extra stereo equipment.

And of course the long door.

Top Gear 1996, Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit

Check out this Top Gear episode from 1996 where they review the Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit.

I am still trying to find Jeremy Clarkson's first ever Top Gear appearance, where he reviews the Bentley Turbo R 2 door by Hooper & Co. If anyone has it, please do let me know.

Hooper & Co Ltd Silver Spur Division

I am a fan of the coachbuilder Hooper.

Like most coachbuilder they are the first to innovate and deliver on what the customer wants. Then the factory copies after a few years.

Like this for example. The first ever Rolls-Royce Silver Spur with division.

Just look at all those things to play with! Just great.

And here it is closed up.

Thanks Don for the images.

Bentley Turbo R 2 Door by Hooper & Co

Here is a lovely factory photo of a Hooper & Co. (Coachbuilders) Ltd Bentley Turbo R 2 door Coupe.

And check this out.

Yep the exact car has been recently spotted at a car show in the US.

I do like the small rear window.

Bonnet scoops or hood vents are pretty cool.

The 2 door profile is well balanced, and it's nice to see a sun roof on a Bentley!

Thanks to Flickr user A Living in Funk.

PS here is an interior shot of this car. Red steering wheel is winning.

After this additional construction was completed, Hooper then sent the car back to the factory for inspection.

Follow The Bentley Turbo R 2 Door by Hooper & Co

I've been using this cool data logging iPhone app for my Bentley driving.

It's call Harry's Lap Timer, and is essentially designed for track days.

It records all types of sensor data provided by your iPhone/iPod/iPad (or external sensors), and combines the data so you can use it in many ways.

You can also overlay the data over video to analyse your driving. Check out the output below of driver, car, date, lap, G-force, time, speed and location.

I don't used it to analyse my laps around the race track, I just use the data logging for fun, and to track my drives.

Like when I was out with the Bentley Drivers Club and I got to follow an extremely rare Bentley Turbo R 2 Door by Hooper & Co.

Check out my video. Sped up 600% so it does not get boring. (Now not blocked in some countries - HD as well use the cog icon to change to HD next to the clock icon)

Did you notice this? It's actually Garrath packing up BDC direction signs - and in a Rolls-Royce!

Or maybe this? An earlier arrival to the hotel.

I certainly had fun following a Bentley Turbo R 2 Door by Hooper & Co for 18 minutes.

What I would love to get into is recording the Bentleys sensor data, like the revs, temperatures, pressures, volts, warning lights and anything else that is monitored through the ECU.

My Bentley uses the RR&B MasterCheck ECU system. The standard system is the OBDII or On Board Diagnostics 2 system. There are plently of Bluetooth OBDII wireless interfaces that will talk to the iPhone.

This will mean I could record all the cars data, then add more dials to the video of what was shown on the actual Bentley dials. That would be so cool.

You can even be nerdy and make the dials on the video looks exactly like the Bentley dials.

It is what Bentley Motors did at the Festival of Speed with the Bentley GT Speed.

The issue is having the MasterCheck ECU convert to the OBDII system. I'm happy that guys are trying to do this. Check out the discussion about it on the RROCA board here.

One day I'll get into it.

Down Under, Part 1

Combi vans, Vegemite sandwiches and beer...

All symbols of Australia that Men At Work sang about in "Down Under" their international hit single:

In January 1983 it was Number One in the British charts and I remember it well.

Those lyrics may even have encouraged me to spend 7 months "Down Under" almost 10-years later.

And as I travelled the country I also experienced Combi vans, Vegemite sandwiches and slabs of VB, Tooheys & Castlemaine.

I also enjoyed many amazing sights...

Including Sydney's Opera House & Harbour Bridge:

Uluru:

Katherine Gorge:

And the Pinnacles Desert:

Those photos aren't mine...they're random web finds.

But I did take the following pictures of the Rolls-Royces and Bentleys I saw as I travelled from place to place.

So here is some "Down Under Bentley Spotting" from almost 20 years ago:

New South Wales

This photo was taken at the service depot of York Motors of Sydney, official Rolls-Royce & Bentley distributors at the time:

Notice the "SPIRIT" registration.

And here are some other photos from around the city:

A Silver Cloud III under the Harbour Bridge....

Victoria

This photo of a Silver Spirit II was taken outside of Hamiltons, the then official Rolls-Royce & Bentley distributor for Melbourne:

And these photos were taken at RA McDermott, a Rolls-Royce & Bentley specialist then operating out of Richmond, Melbourne:

I especialy like this T2...

And this lovely Bentley T Coupe was parked outside of Dutton, a classic car specialist:

These photos are from around Melbourne:

Just calling in for a Yarra Thai take out...

I was even lucky enough to catch the Hooper Emperor State Landaulette during its charity tour of Australia:

Western Australia

This Turbo R & Mulsanne S were photographed at Chellingworth Motors, still the official Bentley distributor for Perth:

And this Silver Spirit was parked downtown:

Do any of our Down Under readers recognize or own one of these cars?
